February Chapter Meeting

Title: February Chapter Meeting
Location: Gordon Biersch
Description: “Green Building Rating Systems: Beyond LEED”

Presented by William Brodnax and Kat West of Merrick/EnergyAce

LEED is by far the most popular green building rating system, but until recently was the only system commonly recognized by the market.  Green Building is a rapidly expanding industry and numerous competitors to LEED are rising in the ranks.  This presentation takes a look at some of the biggest new players including Green Globes, Energy Star, and Earth Advantage.  Attendees will learn the pros and cons of the various systems and will gain a better understanding of why other systems are gaining on LEED.

Kat West is a High Performance Building Consultant at Energy Ace. She manages third-party green building certification for a variety of institutional clients. Kat is a LEED Accredited Professional, an Earth Advantage Commercial Project Trustee, and a Guiding Principles Compliance Professional.  Prior to joining Energy Ace, Kat worked for the nation’s leading retailer of green power where she managed sales and customer service for 15,000 customers for over 5 years. A native of New England, Kat studied Law & Environmental Policy at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut where she ran a popular and effective environmental group earning several awards.

William Brodnax is a Senior Building Consultant specializing in green building education and LEED facilitation.  He has worked in the sustainable development industry for nearly five years and has participated in projects from various stakeholder positions including finance, design, construction and consulting. He is the facilitator on a wide range of projects including medical offices, government office buildings and educational facilities. Recently, he worked with the State of Georgia to develop the Georgia Peach Green Building Rating System. The Georgia Peach program is a set of guidelines and strategies meant to help architects, engineers, and building owners comply with the Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Construct on Act of 2008. He is an experienced public speaker and has organized and led educational workshops across the United States.
